DUCT CLEANING QUESTIONS

How long does it take to clean my duct work? That is hard to answer. Some systems are easily gotten into and will accommodate our equipment much easier than others and they will take less time. Some systems are well laid out and have a minimum of twists and turns in them, some do not. Just like all things all duct systems are not created equally and that will determine the length of time each system will require. The least amount of time required for a duct cleaning will be 3 hours the most time will be all day. Most are to a 4 hour time frame , however each will be different.

How do I know if you did a good job or not? The technician has a camera that is run through the duct system before and after the cleaning. This camera and the actual physical amount of debris removed from the duct system will tell you how much work was done. Many of the items that we are going after are too small to see so it is hard to say just how many dust mites, pet dander, anti bacterial organisms are in the bag. The fog tells you that the ones that were left behind , if any, are dead , but it is hard to determine how many items that are too small to see have been removed .

Will my system run any better after duct cleaning? No, unless we did a planned service visit or changed your system cleaning it will not make it run any different. It may smell better, it may be free of internal items but it will run the same .

Why do I want to consider cleaning my duct work? If you own a 3 ton system that runs 20% of the time conditioning the temperature in your home there have been 126 million 144 thousand cubic feet of air run through your duct system. It is impossible for that much air to travel through anything without leaving something behind. A smaller system will have less air and a bigger system will have more but even the smallest will have many million cubic feet of air travel through it each year. The Jim Brown Company believes that duct cleaning is something that needs to be done routinely on a 5 year plan. After 5 years of air travelling in the duct work any system anywhere for any one needs to be cleaned .

I use scented candles and air fresheners in my home all the time, do I need to have my ducts cleaned ? Yes .

Air fresheners are a big business making things smell better . They do a good job bringing a specific scent into your home but they only mask what is there they do not kill anything and do not remove anything. It is like cologne for your home if you want to think about it like that. We have found on some occasions that people that use these items a great deal will have more debris collected in their duct systems and actually have a system with more problems rather than less. Duct cleaning is just what it says it is, cleaning out the unwanted leaving as little as possible when finished.

How much dust is a lot and how do I know if I got any good from my cleaning? If you were to take a tea cup full of dust mites, pet dander, and micro bacterial organisms you would have a huge amount of them. The things that we are going after are not all as big as dust bunnies and normal dirt, we are really looking for smaller things that can not be seen by the naked eye but are there. It is these small items that create the most problems, health or otherwise for us. A cup full of dust mites, pet dander, and micro bacterial organisms would be much better to have removed from your duct system than a wheel barrel full of saw dust.

What is and is not cleaned with a duct cleaning? When the Jim Brown Company cleans a duct system it concentrates on the duct system, grills, registers, and all items of the piping, trunk duct, and related items involved with the air distribution of the conditioned air in your home or office. The equipment will be looked at during a duct cleaning but items like humidifiers, the air conditioning equipment itself, or any high efficiency filters will not be part of the cleaning beyond making sure that they are vacuumed and have been cleaned by the duct cleaning equipment. In depth cleaning of the refrigeration coils, and complete inspection of items such as humidifiers and high efficiency filters is not part of this project.
