FAQ SERVICE CALLS

1. The reason I called your company was to fix my comfort system, why are you telling me about anything else? All parts of your system including your duct work are related. If one part fails it may cause other components to become overworked and also fail. A service call is more than fixing the obvious problem. To do a good service job all of the components of the system must be checked for performance.

2. Is the service department of the Jim Brown Company trying to tell me that an undersized return air duct made my compressor, blower motor, or other components fail? Yes we are. Parts fail because they are over stressed causing them to fail, in most cases. We find very few parts that wear out. If a component of a comfort system wears out, that system is going to be very old with many other parts ready to fail. When a part fails in a system that has life left in it (The industry standard for the life of a comfort system is from 12 to 16 years) it has been stressed more than it was designed for. Most equipment manufacturers have 10 year warranties on their premium equipment offerings. For a part to fail before that time, the failure was not calculated by the manufacturer and the reason for failure needs to be found.

3. Why is the duct work now so important and why was it not so important when it was installed in my home/office? The duct work delivers the air that the comfort system makes and brings it to the conditioned space. If it is designed properly it will not create stress on the components of the equipment. It is similar to a track meet where sprinters are running a race. One sprinter has a gas mask on that is restricting his performance, while the others do not. It is hard for the restricted sprinter to compete. The reason the duct work has drawn so much attention now is that we have the tools to test total equipment performance that we have never had before. We have found the one most common problems is the duct work, not the equipment that is causing service problems and robbing efficiency. The problem has always been here, we just now are learning how to find it and why it is so important to make corrections.

4. Why is so much emphasis being placed on the return air duct? The return air duct needs to be the most efficient duct in the system. The reason is this is where the supply of air comes from to feed the equipment. If a system never gets enough air, it can not possibly deliver the proper amount of air no matter how hard it tries. This is not to say the supply duct is not important, it certainly is, however before you can distribute the air you first must have enough to distribute.

5. If the air ducts are so important why is the Jim Brown Company just now figuring this out? The equipment that we are installing now is very sophisticated and high tech. It has the ability to bring comfort to its owner with a lower cost per BTU than ever before. This sophistication comes with a price. The price is high tech equipment requires high performance duct work. With out both pieces in place money is being wasted. Those that purchase high SEER equipment with a duct system that is just a little off standard my lose all of the performance they thought they gained. The testing we have done to commission equipment with our high tech testing equipment has proven to us that a seemingly small problem can cost a great deal.

6. I have had planned service with the Jim Brown Company for years, why is professionally cleaning my equipment now so important? We have learned from doing our high tech system analysis that professionally cleaned equipment performed on at least a semi annual basis is not just a nice thing, it is an absolute requirement for the reliability and the efficiency of all comfort systems.

7. Is the service department of the Jim Brown Company trying to tell me that a small film of dust on my blower wheel, small amounts of dust on my indoor and outdoor coils, and minor duct problems are causing me problems and costing me money? Yes we are. If your system is not professionally cleaned twice a year most of the efficiency that you thought you purchased with your high SEER comfort system has been wasted. We now are emphasizing the cleanliness of the equipment to be the highest priority. Dirty equipment can not be properly diagnosed for problems, can not run properly, wastes energy dollars and will fail many times more often. Improperly sized duct work causes loss of efficiency. Professional cleaning of the equipment routinely saves 20% to 30% on the energy bill, be it gas or electricity.

8. I am happy with my equipment, it still has lots of life left in it and I do not want to spend the money to change it out, what can I do to lower my utility bills? There are three things that you can do. The first and easiest is to purchase planned service from the Jim Brown Company. This will bring a technician to your system twice a year to professionally clean the important components. The second thing is to have your system commissioned to be proven with high tech tools and specially trained technicians to have your system perform to it’s maximum ability. The last but most efficient way to save energy dollars is to bring the duct system up to standard by having the performance measured and locate the problems with high tech tools.

9. The Jim Brown Company installed my comfort system and duct work just a short time ago why should I have to change it to gain the proper performance? With time technology changes. Just in this past year advances in technology in our industry have change the way we at the Jim Brown Company think. We now have the tools and the training to prove performance, this is something that we have never had before. Most of the principles of performance were in place with the work we have done in the past. We have learned that many small details that were not important before are very important now. Unless a company has the tools and training to properly test equipment to tell you to the BTU how your system is functioning in your home, or to the CFM of loss, it has no more value than an educated guess.

10. Energy saving is my goal, however everything is so expensive, is there anything that I can do to help me pay for this work? The cost of repairing a comfort system will vary from job to job. Some repairs are easily afforded while others require many dollars to accomplish. The Jim Brown Company has in place two plans to help. It is our goal to allow the utility company to pay as much of the repairs as possible. If what we do saves energy dollars then a cash flow for the repairs has been created. The Jim Brown Company has a budget plan for repairs up to $1,000.00 and Geo Smart is a company that will finance anything the Jim Brown Company sells from $1,000.00 to $25,000.00. Each are fast to qualify and can be done almost immediately.
